Everyone knows there have been incidents of violence among military personnel and civilians as well as encounters between security forces and terrorists. It is a widely known fact that the enviroment in Jammu and Kashmir, in the military sense is now slightly better than what it was when the insurgency first erupted in 1989.
Life has regained normalcy now in the Kashmir valley where schools, colleges and hospitals are functioning normally. Tourists continue to flock into the city to get a breathtaking experience of the scenic spots in Kashmir as well as commerce flourishing.
People are celebrating hindu festivals and thronging to the Hindu temple in Amarnath. In fact, it is said that the rate of violence has decreased by as low as 50% in the summer months of 2007. The number of trained and armed terrorists also show positive signs of peace arising with the number coming down to about 1,400. About 700-800 of them exist in Kashmir while the remaining of them exist in Jammu. The good thing about these terrorist groups is that they are dormant now with no attacks evident.
Even infiltration from across the Line of Control (LoC) has been on the decrease. However, all the machinery have been maintained in good condition in the event a more opportune moment arises for them to be used. Currently, the terrorists do not have the support of the local people and are even facing resistance from them. Instead of violence, militant groups are now using other non-violent means to coerce people to carry the views of separatism.
Well, I think its up to the government and various political parties to keep up the work of promoting ideas by means of speech rather than violence. If a consensus can be reached through means of dialogue, there is a greater possibility that conflicts can be resolved.
